Front of House

The ancestor of Showfile.cfg knew FOH were heroes; it just hadn’t yet learned enough audio vocabulary to explain what any of those heroes actually did.

Festival Program Note

FOH enters the archive as a class of mysterious audio superheroes who “keep the crowd in sync” and perform several other impressive but largely unspecified acts. The admiration was there; the vocabulary absolutely was not. Years later, Showfile.cfg would know about filters, routing, gain, cues, sidechain, and the hundred invisible decisions between source and audience. Put side by side, one feels less like an early draft than a crayon drawing displayed proudly beside the eventual schematic
The 2018 Archives: Old masters, questionable masters, and several ideas that somehow survived both. Archival criticism is permitted; dancing remains mandatory.

Front row black case Radio on my hip Clipboard, coffee stain One more patch check clip I watch the sea of hands Counting every green light If the kick falls off I catch it in time Meter lights climb, I know that face When the drop gets near, I hold the place One cue, one sign, and the whole place leans I keep it clean I keep it mean Front of house, front of house I turn the whole night up Front of house, front of house I keep the crowd in sync When the bass rolls in and the sparks go high Front of house I keep the fever alive Front of house Fog in the truss line Dust on my boots Artists changed the set But I stay glued Pink wristbands glow At the gate so wide I trim the edge When the vocals bite Meter lights climb, I know that face When the drop gets near, I hold the place One cue, one sign, and the whole place leans I keep it clean I keep it mean Front of house, front of house I turn the whole night up Front of house, front of house I keep the crowd in sync When the bass rolls in and the sparks go high Front of house I keep the fever alive Front of house Backlines buzzing Stage crew runs I hear every fault Before it comes Hands on the desk Heart in the wire I tame the wild Then lift it higher Front of house, front of house I turn the whole night up Front of house, front of house I keep the crowd in sync When the bass rolls in and the sparks go high Front of house I keep the fever alive Front of house Front of house, front of house All eyes on my sign Front of house, front of house I make the moment shine
